Tutorial Six: The internet and online communities

For this tutorial I have chosen the almighty guitar and music (again!). The three communities I have chosen are ultimate guitar, you tube and foo fighters.com.

1)   http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

2)  http://www.youtube.com/

3)  http://www.foofighters.com/

Descriptions

  1. Ultimate-guitar.com: This sight is mostly used for people who play the guitar or bass to acess free TABS (music sheets). Here you can access millions of TAB by pretty much any band/artist you can think of!!!. Also included on this site is news, reviews (bands, gear etc), interviews, lessons, forums, contests, youtube. A must wensite for the guitar/bass player and music fan!
  2. Youtube.com: Everyone knows this site, probably does not need explaining. This site is perfect for listening to your favorite music but also checking out amazing covers and uploading your own music! Here's a song by John Butler Trio that Ive recently discovered, its truly amazing!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VAkOhXIsI0

    3. Foofighters.com: Im a crazy foo fighters fan and I just wanted to use this band as an example of fan web sites. Here you can find anything to do with the foo (haha a rhyme) this includes news, tour, music, videos, film, fans, shop, biography and forums. You can find these kind of sites for pretty much any band!

What services are provided?

All of these sites are interactive in there own ways. Ultimate-guitar you can chat to other users about gear, bands and TAB. One can also upload TAB so others can use these. Youtube is very interactive with space for comments under neath for feed back or in some cases abuse, also other people can suggest video's for others to watch or have their own channel that people can access and get email updates when a new video is uploaded .Foo fighters.com has chat rooms for fans to mingle about the band and upcoming tours and albums (wasting light out now!!!!).

One might ask why someone would want to contribute to these sites? the answer is fairly easy. People that access these sites share a common interest with the millions of other people that are on these sites daily. Being a person that visits these sites quite regulary I can say I enjoy sharing my views, beliefs, likes/dislikes and having discussions with other individuals who enjoy the same things I do, which is a natural thing!!!! People are seeking enjoyment and maybe more knowledge about the things they love. It could also be they are seeking something they want for example they wanna learn a new song, watch the latest music video or find out information that you cant access regulary some where else.

Here are some examples of what you could see on these sites.

Foo Fighters: Here is an example from the forum on the site. A fan letter to dave grohl.    http://bbs.foofighters.com/showthread.php?t=31600

Dear Mr. Grohl,

Knowing you are an avid chess player, I was wondering if you would be interesting in playing me sometime. I understand you are very busy, so I am willing to wait until the end of your current tour before playing you in a Best of 3 chess game. I hope it will be enjoyable for you and myself, as well as the large crowd such an interesting match-up is bound to draw.

I feel we should use a glass chess set, I feel it looks better and refracts the light nicely, but I will use a standard wooden chess set if you want to.

I would also like to play you at Scrabble, but I feel that with you being American, it could lead to arguments over correct spelling, so we'll play Risk instead.

Thank you for your time,
Thomas.

Ultimate-guitar: Here is an example of guitar TAB, hunger strike by Temple of the Dog.

Ethics
Some of the ethical issues with these sites is that no-body actually knows who the person is commenting.
A good example of this is youtube, when people leave nasty comments, all that can be done is blocking the indivdual.
People think and say whatever they want cos theyre just a name on a page. This can also be bad as you dont know
the age or the sex of that person.

Overall these communites are pretty good. They have about as much identitification of indivduals as any other site and
administers watch the sites closely for in appropriate comments or videos. These communities help to bring people
together with a common interest and I would recomment these sites to anyone who shared the similar interset.

Matt out =)

Tutorial Five: Video Production Sessions

For this tutorial we were asked to provide some of the services offered by youtube and share a topic of interest to do with either fieldwork experience, OT practice or a personal occupation.

Youtube is used by millions of people daily, its one of the most popular websites of our time. Youtube has many services to provide to consumers with one thing in common: video's. Here ill list some of the different kinds of video's you could find.
  • Social networking: This could be video's of your beliefs, experiences, likes/dislikes.
  • Funny stuff: Animals, people, natural looking things that are gross, sign's, and ironic humour.
  • Music: Music video's (professional/non-professional), teaching of an instrument, teasers, and songs.
  • Movies: Trailers, home movies and sometimes full length movies but split into about 5 video uploads.
  • TV: TV series
  • Educational: Anything you could think of from cooking to tying shoe laces.
  • Video blogs
  • And many more!!!
The topic of interest I would like to share and for those that know me it's pretty predictable, is guitar =). I will supply five or more different sources of online content that explains and demonstrates the awsumness of the coolest thing since dinosaurs.....the geeeetar!!!

  • This first video just shows how people are insane when it comes to building things. This video is impressive and just plain out rocks!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8GoPj3Cq0E&feature=related

  • This next video shows that no matter how crap life can get and even if you don't have hands or even arm's, there is still the possibility to rock!!!!! Take a look your mouth will drop.....  "get lost in the rock n roll and drift away"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3gMgK7h-BAhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSnUwA6c67k

  •      This video shows that the younger you are, the better and the older you are, the cheaper you get!

Tutorial Two: Digital Imaging

List some of the ways that digital images are stored transferred and manipulated using information technology.
  1. Windows media player
  2. Quick time
  3. Windows movie maker
  4. Photo shop
Prove at least three examples of the use of digital imaging to provide information and recording
  1. Photos-Gives the learner visual information
  2. Videos-Gives the learner information in regard to visual, audio and movement
  3.  Diagrams- Gives the learner information in a well set out format that could include pictures

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”

Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology
  • In my opinion I think this statement is wrong. Isn't the point of technology to advance? I dont see how cameras back in the early 1900's are better than the digital cameras we have today! Some things may be better such as cars but not camera's!
Some negatives of digital cameras are as follows:
  1. You have to have or have access to a computer, which not everyone has.
  2. They have to be charged or take batteries.
  3. They are expensive.
  4. There are so many settings etc that one must get their head around to just take a picture.
  5. Have screens, easy to break!
Some positives are as follows:
  1. They are light weight, easy to carry and store.
  2. You can see what the picture you just took looks like, no waiting till they're processed and not liking what the result is!
  3. There are a different range of effects and settings for the more experienced photographer e.g. fast speed, night time, red eye etc.
  4. You can put them anywhere! facebook, blogs, internet, home, phone etc list goes on and on.......
  5. Everyone has them now so if you've got one you know your up with the times!
Traditional cameras were cheap, tough, heavy (made a man or a woman out of you), no batteries or messing around it was take a picture and hope for the best (good old days).

Given the prevalence of image capturing and distribution using IT, what ethical issues may arise with their use?
  1. Privacy: People don't seem to take notice of other peoples thoughts and opinions when it comes to pictures and the net. Countless amounts of times you would of gone to a party, maybe had one to many, and you jumped in a picture. Then the next day your facebook stalking and you see a trashy picture of yourself and you don't really want people to see it and there's nothing you can do. Yeah ok you just wanna share "fun times" but be a pal and ask first, you never know who's watching............
  2. Another ethical example is copyright laws. Some people get quite upset if you take pictures of their things, even when it doesn't seem to you to be that important. Take the library here for example at Otago Polytech, your not aloud to take pictures. To me that's silly what possibly am I going to steal? the librarians awesome choice of clothing?......With all seriousness one must be aware of where they take pictures cos some people out there are sneaky and try to get ideas or steal ideas for a cunning plan they have in mind. Take Mc Donalds for example, they have pictures on the wall of whats in their burgers so they dont want anyone taking snap shots, one should just have a good eye and an outstanding long term memory!

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice
  1. When teaching or explaining new skills to clients, digital images can be a good way of explaining these, especially for a visual learner.
  2. If a therapist needs to get an idea of a clients home for extensions or adaptions a camera would come in handy as the therapist would not need to take as much notes or visits to get an idea of the environment.
  3. Video's could be used to show a clients progress at something they have been learning. \an example could be a client that had a brain injury and has been learning to take part in self care tasks again and video footage could show their progress quite well.

Tutorial One: Information Technology and Ethical Issues

Definition: Information technology (IT) is the acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a microelectronics-based combination of computing and telecommunications, Retrieved on the 25/03/11 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology . Make sense to anyone else????? In my own words I'd say that IT is technology to do with objects or things that came out after 1999. These "things" hold information like computers and stuff? I really don't know, I enjoy using these "things" but not really interested in how or what it is, as long as it works and we all know that technology doesn't work that well or maybe that's just our open access suite hahahaha.

So how common is technology today? It is so common that social networks like Facebook invade everyone's lives, I read the other day that 85% of people as soon as they wake up check Facebook, that's sad!

We are or have entered a era of laziness of our human existence, where we have created machines to do all the work, this great new thing we have is called, you guessed it, technology! 20 years ago you would send a hand written letter and get one back in a week or month, now with e-mail, skype, facebook, twitter this contact takes not days but minutes! this is just an example but there are plenty more of people getting lazier and lazier in this great era of life, all I can say is I hope computers everywhere don't crash cos we wall all be.......

Here is a link to an "older man" using you tube for the first time.
Retrieved on the 25/3/11 from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_YMigZmUuk
Do I feel comfortable with IT? yes and no. Yes= its quick, sometimes fun and easy. No= its more often than not hard to get your head around, too much stuff you have to know or do, and stresses me out cos a machine is in control.

How is IT being used in Occupational Therapy?
  • Teaching sessions (Power point, videos)
  • Meetings (Word, power point, internet)
What issues exist around OTs adoption of IT systems and tools?
  • May take some time to gain enough knowledge on how to use differnt systems/tools
  • There may have to be some kind of course that one needs to go on before using a certain system/tool
  • Cost
  • Will it be beneficial for clients? will they be able to use this technology with their clients i.e will their conditions get in the way e.g. auditory deficits

What are some of the ways you can envisage IT use becoming a potential tool of practice?
  • I can see IT being used in how it is already being used, as an easier way to communicate with work mates and clients, to teach clients new material, for other things such as music or videos.
  • A good example of technology in practice is the use of the Nitendo Wii, this is an interactive console that involves arm and leg movement. This video is an example of a Nitendo Wii in use by some indivduals that experinece conditions such as muscle weakness and therapist try to incorpotate the Wii into exercise as it is something new and the clients find it fun and more interesting compared to traditional exercise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI0BAviwXDo&feature=related
The only reason IT is essential in practice these days and any other job is because IT has taken the world like a tsunami, its just the current trend in the school yard at the moment. Who knows it could stay or it could advance in such a level that we could not believe, who knows whats going to happen! I think technology is good for OT practice in the sense that like the Wii and can create a more interesting approach to treatment, but I also find it can limit the approach to treatment e.g. Traditional exercise would not just get the arms going, it would get the whole body going.

What ethical implications arise from capturing, sharing and transferring of information via IT devices (Phone's etc) or systems (internet).
  • Copy write laws
  • Privacy
  • Consent
Intellectual property: term referring to a number of distinct types of creations of the mind for which a set of exclusive rights are recognized and the corresponding fields of law. Under intellectual property law, owners are granted certain exclusive rights to a variety of intangible assets,  such as musical, literary, and artistic works; discoveries and inventions; and words, phrases, symbols, and designs. Common types of intellectual property include copyrights and trade secrets. retrieved on the 25/3/11 from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property

I have no idea what this really is, it doesnt make sense and Im gonna be honest it bores me. I see it as copy right laws and that one can use a piece of material only under strict conditions by the owner. I guess an example of this for OT practice could be the assessments OT's use, in the sense that they have to be aware of the creater, and the procedure behing it. I dont know.....

Social justice: Refers to treating people equally, either in society or the work place. Basically values human rights. This can be linked to OT as when working in practice we need to treat our clients equally and even though they might have an illness or an impairment, we are all the same and should be treated the equally.

Clayton, M. & Williams, A. (2004). Social Justice. United Kingdom: Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

Informed consent: Getting consent from the person you wish to use in a study or use something that is theirs for another purpose. For example a photo, video, or an interview. This consent will generally outline exactly what will happen with the material and recognizing the ethics behind it. OT's will ask consent for things such as record files, student OT's working with them and also pictures and videos.

Wear, S. (1993). Informed Consent: Patient autonomy and physician beneficence with clinical medicine. Netherlands: Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Tutorial Four: Video production session.....Finger Puppet Rehabilitation....... Our group's short movie!

As part of this tutorial our group had to plan and execute a short movie. The idea of finger puppets was introduced and we were planning to go along with the theme of dont bring your mates like the one thats on tv. We planned each scene with a quick drawing as the background to the finger puppets was just that, a piece of paper with drawing on it. Our video kind of drifted off the topic of occupational therapy but most peoples did anyway. It was alot of fun but its just a shame the quality is off cos its kind of funny or disgusting, depends on your sense of humour really.
