Tutorial Two: Digital Imaging

List some of the ways that digital images are stored transferred and manipulated using information technology.
  1. Windows media player
  2. Quick time
  3. Windows movie maker
  4. Photo shop
Prove at least three examples of the use of digital imaging to provide information and recording
  1. Photos-Gives the learner visual information
  2. Videos-Gives the learner information in regard to visual, audio and movement
  3.  Diagrams- Gives the learner information in a well set out format that could include pictures

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”

Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology
  • In my opinion I think this statement is wrong. Isn't the point of technology to advance? I dont see how cameras back in the early 1900's are better than the digital cameras we have today! Some things may be better such as cars but not camera's!
Some negatives of digital cameras are as follows:
  1. You have to have or have access to a computer, which not everyone has.
  2. They have to be charged or take batteries.
  3. They are expensive.
  4. There are so many settings etc that one must get their head around to just take a picture.
  5. Have screens, easy to break!
Some positives are as follows:
  1. They are light weight, easy to carry and store.
  2. You can see what the picture you just took looks like, no waiting till they're processed and not liking what the result is!
  3. There are a different range of effects and settings for the more experienced photographer e.g. fast speed, night time, red eye etc.
  4. You can put them anywhere! facebook, blogs, internet, home, phone etc list goes on and on.......
  5. Everyone has them now so if you've got one you know your up with the times!
Traditional cameras were cheap, tough, heavy (made a man or a woman out of you), no batteries or messing around it was take a picture and hope for the best (good old days).

Given the prevalence of image capturing and distribution using IT, what ethical issues may arise with their use?
  1. Privacy: People don't seem to take notice of other peoples thoughts and opinions when it comes to pictures and the net. Countless amounts of times you would of gone to a party, maybe had one to many, and you jumped in a picture. Then the next day your facebook stalking and you see a trashy picture of yourself and you don't really want people to see it and there's nothing you can do. Yeah ok you just wanna share "fun times" but be a pal and ask first, you never know who's watching............
  2. Another ethical example is copyright laws. Some people get quite upset if you take pictures of their things, even when it doesn't seem to you to be that important. Take the library here for example at Otago Polytech, your not aloud to take pictures. To me that's silly what possibly am I going to steal? the librarians awesome choice of clothing?......With all seriousness one must be aware of where they take pictures cos some people out there are sneaky and try to get ideas or steal ideas for a cunning plan they have in mind. Take Mc Donalds for example, they have pictures on the wall of whats in their burgers so they dont want anyone taking snap shots, one should just have a good eye and an outstanding long term memory!

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice
  1. When teaching or explaining new skills to clients, digital images can be a good way of explaining these, especially for a visual learner.
  2. If a therapist needs to get an idea of a clients home for extensions or adaptions a camera would come in handy as the therapist would not need to take as much notes or visits to get an idea of the environment.
  3. Video's could be used to show a clients progress at something they have been learning. \an example could be a client that had a brain injury and has been learning to take part in self care tasks again and video footage could show their progress quite well.
